Dispur disowns report on replacement of Gandhi statue

GUWAHATI, Aug 9: The Assam Government has tweeted that the reported replacement of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue at Gandhi Mandap in the city with a new one is baseless news. Dispur tweeted that the statue of Gandhiji to remain as it is. At a top-level meeting on August 7 presided over by Kamrup(M) DC M Angamuthu and attended, among others, by State Cultural Affairs Minister ba Kumar Doley, MLA Siddhartha Bhattacharya, social activist Renuka Devi Barkataky and Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Saharia it was decided to renovate Gandhi Mandap under the Smart City project. A press release issued by the district administration said that the renovation would include replacement of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue also.
