Dispur draws up plan to preserve Deepor Beel

GUWAHATI, Aug 11: Dispur has woken up to the need for protection of Deepor Beel, the lone Ramsar site in the state, with state Forest Department drawing up an action plan to preserve the vast expanse of wetland. Replying to a query by Congress MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed, Forest and Environment minister Pramila Rani Brahma informed the House today that an action plan has been prepared for the period from 2016-17 to 2018-19 to preserve and protect the wetland. Deepor Beel is home to a rich variety of flora and fau that include nearly 200 species of birds. Minister Brahama admitted the fact that fishes have perished occasiolly in Deepor Beel due to water pollution. Brahma said that the Beel at present spreads an area of 4.10 square km. She further informed that the Forest department in collaboration with State Pollution Control Board conducted a survey to gauge the cause of pollution in the wetland and it was the found that the GMC dumping ground at Paschim Boragaon, which has become a serious threat to Deepor Beel, is the main cause behind the pollution.
