Death of ailing accused of gaon incident

GUWAHATI, Oct 11: Dispur faces a serious allegation of human rights violation following the death of Sujit Dey, a cancer patient who was arrested by the police on September 8, 2017 in connection with the August 22, 2017 incident in gaon.

Talking to media here on Wednesday, North Karimganj MLA Kamalakshya Dey Purkayastha said: “Sujit Dey was a cancer patient under treatment in Tata Memorial Hospital when he was arrested by the police on September 8, 2017. However, he was denied bail and given no proper treatment, leading to his death on October 1, 2017. This is one of the extreme precedents of human rights violation by any government.”

Giving details of the incident, the Congress MLA from North Karimganj said: “After arresting Sujit Dey on September 8 the police on September 11 sent him to Bhogeswari Phukani Civil Hospital in gaon from where he was referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). At the GMCH, the accused was given only liver treatment, not of cancer. Based on the condition of the patient, Sujit Dey should’ve been sent to the B Barooah Cancer Institute (BBCI), Guwahati for treatment. However, he was not sent there. Sujit Dey died on October 1, 2017 due to lack of proper treatment. This is human rights violation of extreme ture. People’s life has no value under this government in the State. Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal speaks of going ahead by taking all along. He also says that a culprit is culprit, regardless of his/her caste or creed. It’s the bounden duty of the State administration to provide proper treatment to an ailing accused. What makes Dispur not to do this duty in case of Sujit Dey properly? Is it because he’s a Bengali? Bengalis are the ones who’ve voted the BJP to power.”

The MLA further said: “I want a high-level inquiry into the entire incident. I’m going to move the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) in this regard. I’ve already contacted the rights body. I demand a government job for Sujit Dey’s widow who’s helpless with two children –an eight-year-old one and a three-year-old one. Dispur should also be released compensation to the next of kin of Sujit Dey.”

The MLA, who visited the bereaved family of Sujit Dey at Chaparmukh on Tuesday, said: “Assam never witnessed commulism in such a dimension– neither during the AGP regime, nor in the 15-year Congress rule.”
