Dispur-GACDC talks initiated

GUWAHATI, Feb 21: The Government of Assam today initiated official round of bilateral talks with Gorkha Autonomous Council Demand Committee (GACDC) on various issues of Indigenous Gorkhas of Assam. The Government invited GACDC for officials talks after Harka Bahadur Chetry, chairman of GACDC who had undertaken Raithaney Gorkha Gan Anshan (Mass People Fast) yesterday at Dighalipukhuri Par at Lakshidhar Bora Kshetra, Guwahati after being denied fast-unto-death democratic agitation by administration. The seven-member high-level GACDC delegation was lead by its Chairman Harka Bahadur Chetry and the Government of Assam was represented by Commissioner and Secretary Home & Political Affairs etc., LS Changsan and Chief Coorditor NRC Assam Prateek Hajela Additiol Director General of Police, Special Branch Pallab Bhattacharrya and senior officers from WPT, Education, Assam Accord Implementation were present.

At the meeting, all demands put forth by the GACDC through the memorandum submitted by GACDC was discussed elaborately. Following this meeting, the Government officially started the bilateral talks with GACDC and the later suspended its agitation for the time being.

Next round of bilateral talks will be held either in last week of April or first week of May. In the mean time, the GACDC is advised to participate in expert committee formation for Education and other issues.
