Dispur has takers among walkers!

BY OUR STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Nov19: Dispur does not always talk the talk. It, sometimes, walks the walk. This is what the crowd walking in the stretch of the Mahatma Gandhi Road spanning from Bharalu to Sukreshwar Temple in the Fancy Bazar area in Guwahati gossips about.

After the very stretch of the road becoming a walking zone for pedestrians every Sunday from 4 pm to 10 pm, the road seems to be very busy. Does it help city dwellers or add to their problems?

Talking to The Sentinel on Sunday, P Gupta, a resident of the area, said: “It’s a good step taken by the government. Barring some incidents of people getting stuck in traffic congestion in the roads through which vehicular traffic is diverted during the walking periods the initiative taken by the government seems to have received accolade. The environment on the bank of the Brahmaputra looks quite tural on every Sunday evening. People crowd the road by taking part in walking. A few roadside cultural programmes are also arranged.”

The move has also benefitted others. Sharing their feelings with this reporter a few of the street vendors doing business to make their both ends meet said: “We’re doing a brisk business now – selling street foods, betel-nut and the like.” They enjoy the environment on every Sunday evening. They term this as one of the laudable steps taken by the Government at Dispur. Talking to this reporter, a local resident said: “I go to walk every Sunday to enjoy the ture. Huge crowds are seen in the evening.”
