'Dispur is paying scant regard to schemes for deaf and dumb'

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 27: Hundreds of members of the Assam Association of the Deaf, with their faces covered with black bandas, had to shout in full throttle for long four hours at Lakhidhar Bora Kshetra in the city today against the State Government that, according to the Association, has been paying scant regard to the schemes meant for them.

According to the  members of the Association, it is the negligence on the part of the Congress Government at Dispur that has made thousands of differently-abled people in different parts of the State a sort of burden for society. “Then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi did take a number of schemes for the benefit of differently-abled people, but the Congress Government at Dispur has been paying scant regard to the schemes. What they have been giving us over the years is false assurances. This is the reason why lakhs of differently –abled people have been living a horrible life in the State.”

Some of the demands of the Association are their free-of-cost travel in ASTC buses, affiliation of the Deaf and Dumb School at Jorhat up to high school level, appointment of trained teachers in the school, immediate appointment to the list of deaf and dumb candidates prepared by Dispur in 2005, immediate identification of the backlog posts meant for deaf and dumb from 2006-2015 and filling them up by February 2016, payment of annual allowance to deaf and dumb etc.
