Dispur should’ve a heart: Saikia on eviction

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 26:  Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader Debobrata Saikia, who is also the Leader of Opposition in the Assam Assembly, has said that Dispur should have a heart while evicting settlers from the Kaziranga tiol Park (KNP) additions and professiol grazing reserve (PGR) lands in the State.

“The government showed not even an iota of humanity while carrying out the eviction drive. The settlers were reportedly threatened to leave. It should be ascertained if the settlers are illegal foreigners or not. If they are, the government should first detain them and then deport them to their countries. Leaving them roofless isn’t humane,” Saikia said.

Spelling out Supreme Court’s rules meant for eviction, Saikia said: “The government should’ve rehabilitated the settlers before their eviction. The government should measure the area of land it possesses to resettle the settlers. Moreover, there is every possibility of the evicted ones being indigenous people of the State.”
