Dr Vee Talwar to speak on evolution of dowry in city

Guwahti, Feb 22: Omeo Kumar Das Institute of Social Change and Development, the premier social science research institute of Northeast is going to organise two lectures by two eminent social scientists—Dr Vee Talwar Oldenburg and Dr Philip Oldenburg at the Conference Hall of the Institute, a press release said. Dr Vee Talwar Oldenburg, a feminist historian of the colonial period, who taught at City University of New York, would speak on the theme, “The Evolution of Dowry from Safety Net to Noose”. Dr Philip Oldenburg, a political scientist specializing in the comparative politics of South Asia, on the other hand, would speak on the topic, “Why India is a Democracy, and Pakistan is Not”. Whereas the first lecture of Dr Vee Talwar Oldenburg is scheduled at 2.30-4pm, on February 27, the second lecture of Dr Philip Oldenburg is scheduled at 4.30-6 pm on the same day. The Institute invites all interested people to attend the lectures and interact with the speakers.
