GUWAHATI, Oct 19: The Central Guwahati Students’ Union (CGSU), a unit of the All Guwahati Students’ Union (AGSU), has told Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) to make potable water available in every household in the city come what may, or face the music.
Over 500 members of the students’ body staged a sit-in demonstration at Silpukhuri in the city today demanding regular supply of drinking water. For the past five months, people in various areas in the city like Pub Sarania, Dakshin Sarania, Gandhibasti, Rehabari, Birubari, Silpukhuri, Kharguli and Lachit gar have been suffering from lack of drinking water. The students shouted slogans like ‘GMC hai hai, khuwa panir samashya door korok’ etc.
Talking to the media, CGSU general secretary Sukumar Barman said: “GMC has failed to deliver proper services on many fronts like supply of potable water, proper upkeep of roads and drains, controlling dengue etc., let alone checking artificial floods. Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania is busy in receiving gamosas. Instead of wasting time for that he should go to the city areas and ensure regular supply of drinking water. The problem of drinking water has been afflicting the city dwellers badly. A number of drinking water projects in the city have been lying idle due to lack of repair or shoddy works done at the time of their construction. In such a situation, GMC should supply water in the affected areas. However, nobody is listening, neither GMC nor local MLAs. If the problem of drinking water is not solved, we’ll resort to a vigorous agitation. If the government can’t make this happen, what can one expect from it?”
