Ethnic body opposes Amchang eviction; demands implementation of Forest Rights Act

GUWAHATI, Dec 7: Members of the Jajatiya Adhikar Mancha (JAM) staged a sit-in protest at Dighalipukhuripar here today in support of their charter of demands including the implementation of the Forest Rights Act 2006, and also called for re-verification of the two-third land ownership claims of more than 1.31 lakh indigenous applicantions that were rejected.

The President of the organisation, Pur Bora and its Secretary Rajani Daimari strongly opposed the eviction drives carried out at Amchang Forest Reserve here on November 27 and 28 where more than a thousand of households were demolished. The JAM president demanded that all the people who settled in the area prior to December 13, 2005, should not have been evicted according to the Forest Rights Act 2006. Pointing out that as the Act has been violated, Bora demanded that the authorities concerned must immediately rehabilitate the victims and also pay them the due compensation. He added that all these evicted people origilly hailed from the flood affected areas of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Majuli

Elders body supports eviction: On the other hand, another organisation mely the Axom Jyastha garik Sanmilan (AJNS) has today in a press release welcomed the eviction drives carried out at Amchang.
