GUWAHATI, Sept 21: BJP MLA Atul Bora (Senior) on Wednesday alleged that former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi relentlessly worked for providing settlement to illegal Bangladeshi migrants in several parts of the state.

Speaking to The Sentinel, Bora said that the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress Government in the state helped in providing settlement to Bangladeshi tiols who have illegally entered the state. “The Congress party under the leadership of Tarun Gogoi never took initiative in eviction of illegal migrants from Bangladesh during their 15-year rule. They (Congress) worked only for their (Bangladeshi) rehabilitations,” Bora stated.

The Dispur MLA further alleged that Gogoi helped in settling illegal Bangladeshi migrants in several areas in Upper Assam. “Gogoi helped in the settlement of Bangladeshis in Upper Assam. He (Gogoi), even helped several illegal migrants from Lower Assam to relocate to Upper Assam in order to strengthen the vote bank,” Bora remarked.

He also stated that Tarun Gogoi did not pay any heed for the development of the state. “He (Gogoi) was busy in gathering the votes of illegal Bangladeshis by facilitating their settlement. He, hardly got any time to look into the development of the state,” Bora further alleged.

Referring to the development of the Dispur LAC, Bora said that the Government has taken several steps to develop the bordering areas with Meghalaya that fall under his constituency.

“The road connecting Basistha with Barpathar will jointly be developed by the PWD and the Indian army. We are also chalking out plans to deviate the water that flows from Meghalaya hills to Deepor Beel which will help in controlling 80 per cent of the flash flood in the city,” Bora said.

The BJP MLA, along with PWD officials on Wednesday visited several border areas under Dispur LAC including – Barpathar, Patarkuchi, Byrnihat, Lakhimigar and Miajan and took stock of the prevailing conditions. He also assured the local residents of providing all the basic facilities like water supply, proper draige, and electricity.
