Expertise of sailors put to test

GUWAHATI, July 3: It seems that days are not far for one to set sail with vessels in the Brahmaputra. As if the plan is fil, top-level officials in the State Inland Water Transport Department are contemplating on holding training camps for sailors at the tiol level.

According to sources, the government is going to take steps to make that happen. The State IWT has a sailor training centre of its own. However, the move being taken is to train sailors at the tiol standard. For safe water transport expert sailors are a scarce in the State.

According to sources, for the first time a written test followed by an interview was held in the State yesterday for issuing certificates to sailors on their expertise. The written test and the interview were held at Directorate of Inland Water Transport at Ulubari in the city.
