Filmy way of counselling jail inmates!

GUWAHATI, Jan 9: The Krish Kanta Hendiqui State Open University organized a two-day counselling programme for the jail inmates of Central Jail, Guwahati from today alongside a documentary festival.

Renowned film-maker Jhanu Barua iugurated the programme and the Brajen Baruah Memorial Documentary Festival will screen five selected documentary for the jail inmates.

KKHSOU vice chancellor Hitesh Deka deliberated upon the University’s foray into fields where the deprived section can be brought back into the mainstream through distance learning opportunities. He said that study centres of the Open University will deliver its services in every jail of the State and has already started functioning in thirteen jails of the State. A proposal of offering free study facility is also on the cards.

Professiol Psychology practitioner Dr. Sangita Goswami has also been roped in for the counselling sessions for assessment and treatment of mental health problems of the jail inmates.

IGP (Prisons) Ranjan Sarma has thanked the University authority for initiating such meaningful dialogues and expressed gratitude for creating valuable opportunities. The goal of such activities, he said, is to prepare the prisoner for success outside of prison and to enhance the rehabilitative aspects of prison.

Dibyajyoti Mahanta, Dean, KKHSOU, was also present during the function.
