Follow ideals and philosophy of Gandhi: Governor

GUWAHATI, Oct 2: One should follow the ideals and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi, said Assam Governor Banwarilal Purohit on the cleanliness campaign launched on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s 148th birth anniversary on the premises of the Kamakhya Temple in the city this morning.

Quoting Gandhiji’s idea of cleanliness the Governor said, “We should all try to work for a clean Assam.” He called upon the assembly to follow the adage, “You should not litter and should not allow others to litter.”

“A sense of responsibility should evoke among the people to keep the state clean. Laws, rules and regulations should be made regarding cleanliness and heavy pelty should be imposed if someone doesn’t abide by the cleanliness rules. Assam should top the list of cleanliness drive in the country,” the Governor said.

Lauding the culture and people of Assam, the Governor said that the people of the state had the reflection of the works of the saint Srimanta Sankardev and his work have had a cascading effect on the state and the people should adhere to the teachings of Srimanta Sankardeva to make the state an ideal place for cleanliness and godliness.

The Governor further said that tourism in Assam holds numerous potentialities and can attract foreigners if the sector is made to be developed completely.

State Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal, who was also present on the occasion, reiterated the mantra of Mahatma Gandhiji, Father of tion ‘Cleanliness is Godliness’  and laid stress on the need of  individual and community cleanliness.

State Cultural Minister ba Kumar Doley,  Guwahati East MLA Siddhartha Bhattacharya, Howraghat MLA Joy Ram Engleng, Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania and DGP Mukesh Sahay and other high officials were present on the occasion.
