GUWAHATI, Nov 11: We need to survive! Food is one part in life to survive. Instead of wasting excess food why cannot one use it for the homeless who cry for a piece of bread?
A new city-based group, Aajyaveer, in collaboration with ture Care Tourism Education Foundation, iugurated two food banks at two places in Guwahati – Three Guys Restaurant and Gam’s Delicacy. The foundation has installed two refrigerators to store excess food fresh for hungry and needy people to have, without making any payment. The two food banks were iugurated by DGP Mukhesh Sahay and RTI Commissioner Himanshu Sekhar Das respectively.
Speaking to The Sentinel, Julie Burgohain, the founder of Aajyaveer, said: “I love to involve myself in social works. A few years back due to preoccupation with a job I can’t give much time to such works. However, after quiting the job I started it again. The planning of the food bank was in my mind from long back. So I started sharing my views with my friends and seniors. The response was positive, so my confidence got a boost, and I started working. And filly on November 6, I got the opportunity to iugurate the two food banks. I’m happy to see the response from my friends, family and off course, the city people.”
Adding she said: “I like to convey a message to all not to waste excess food. If possible, they can pack and hand over it to the food banks. If this continues, many poor and hungry people can eat food daily. In a short span we are getting a very good response. I hope in future we can increase more food banks if supports continue to come from people. We’re doing regular campaign to make people aware so that everyone comes forward to help us.”
