GUWAHATI, Dec 14: In what can best be termed as sailing against the current, veteran and founder AGP leader Zoith Sarma joined the Congress today in the presence of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Anjan Dutta and other leaders of the party.

Former minister Sarma was sacked by the AGP in 2011 for contesting the poll as an independent candidate against the AGP’s official candidate.

The Congress welcomed Sarma for joining the Congress at a time when most of the leaders of regiol parties of Assam have been in a rush to the join the BJP.

Speaking at the function, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said: “I’m intelligent, and Himanta Biswa Sarma is also intelligent. However, Zoith Sarma is more intelligent than Himanta. When my intelligence and that of Zoith have combined, the fall of the BJP in 2016 Assembly election is certain. We’re sure to form the government at Dispur in 2016. With the leaders of the BJP becoming more and more intolerant, the people of Assam continue to inch towards the Congress.”

Speaking on the occasion, Zoith Sarma said: “The Congress was in the need of a Sarma after the one it had joined the BJP. I’ve filled the vacant place. I’m sure, I’ll let the Congress flag fly in Sipajhar in 2016. Though I’ve joined a tiol  party, I’ve not let my regiol mind set die. I’ll continue to work for the people.” It is worth mentioning here that Congress’ Sipajhar MLA Bida Kumar Saikia followed the suit of Himanta Biswa Sarma and joined the BJP.
