GUWAHATI, July 5: Police today arrested four special police officers (SPOs) as the latter were protesting over the non-fulfillment of their long-pending demands. On Saturday, police apprehended several SPOs when they staged protest in front of Guwahati Central Jail at Lakhra in Guwahati.
The detained SPOs were released today. However, police arrested the four SPOs from Dispur Police station, who were reportedly invited for discussion with ACP. Sources said they were kept waiting in the Dispur police station whole night.
The state government raised the SPOs in 2008 to guard government officials and vital installations after Dimsa militants triggered large-scale violence in Dima Hasao area.
Many surrendered ultras were also inducted in the squad under rehabilitation schemes. The SPOs were later posted in Chirang, gaon, Kamrup, Barpeta, lbari and Morigaon districts too.
