Free Akhil Gogoi: Saikia

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 16: Congress Legislature Party (CLP) Leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia has sent a letter to State Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal with an appeal to release KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi.

Saikia said: “We’ve been observing with serious concern that cases are being slapped on the KMSS leader one after another. Though I, in persol capacity, and the Congress don’t extend support to the KMSS leader, many of his demands do reflect the aspirations of the common people of the State. The slapping of cases one after another on Akhil Gogoi and treating him like a murderer and traitor reek of the government’s ulterior motive.  The government is trying to suppress the voice of the KMSS leader by arresting him repeatedly in cases as old as 10/12 years. The Supreme Court says that not supporting government policies doesn’t mean betraying the country. I feel that the State government is misusing the laws, violating human rights and freedom of speech. I appeal to the government to release Akhil Gogoi soon.”
