Free textbooks to students opposed

 By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 2: A meeting convened by the All Assam Publishers and Book Sellers’ Association (AAPBSA) has termed Dispur’s move to provide free of cost textbooks to students will be detrimental to the publication industry in the State.
The meeting was attended by booksellers, publishers, writers, educationists, intellectuals, Guwahati citizenry and other stakeholders of society. The meeting took a number of resolutions opposing any move to provide free of costs textbooks to the students of private schools and favoured supply of free of cost textbooks to BPL students of government schools. The meeting expressed its concern over the government’s move to publish textbooks on its own for supplying them to students free of cost, and said that such a move would spell doom for the publication industry in the State.
