GUWAHATI, June 4: The Brihattar Uzan Bazar Anusuchita Nibonuwa Matsya Byobosayee Sanstha worshipped Goddess Ganga on the bank of the Brahmaputra in the city today.

The devotees worship Goddess Ganga during this season as it marks the confluence of the water of the Brahmaputra and that of the Ganga.  Brihattar Uzan Bazar Anusuchita Nibonuwa Matsya Byobosayee Sanstha secretary Bhaskar Das, a fifth generation scion of the Sanstha, said: “The worship is among the folk believers. We do believe that this worship protects us from the wrath of the Brahmaputra – erosion and floods. Ours is the only Ganga Puja in Assam. Unlike other years, this year we had to offer oblation to the Goddess on the bank of the Brahmaputra as the river is in spate now. There were rituals like hum yaj, am prasanga etc., in the morning. In the evening devotiol cinemas were screened.”
