Garbage right under GMC’s nose!

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 11: Are not those doing business in the GMC Market Complex at Fancy Bazar, Guwahati or those visiting it litterbugs? Is there sufficient bandabast to keep the market clean?
How come a civic body, which the onus of keeping Guwahati clean lies with, allows litter louts to do such a mischief under its very nose? However, the condition of the GMC market at Fancy Bazar, Guwahati suggests so, for the garbage is right under the civic body’s nose.
The structure housing the GMC Market at Fancy Bazar in the city is a multi-storeyed building that also houses an office of the civic body on the top floor. Needless to say that GMC is one of the nodal agencies assigned for implementation of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, followed by Swachh Survekshan 2017, in Guwahati. This essentially means that the civic body in the engine room in so far as keeping Guwahati clean is concerned.
This, however, does not reflect in the very ambience of the GMC market complex and office building. The ground floor of the building being used for parking is underground. While the first floor of the building is used as a wholesale market, including vegetables, the second floor has mainly godowns and some wholesalers. The first and second floors of the building look like garbage dumps. Traders doing business on the two floors and people visiting the market litter them, making them stinking. Officials manning the GMC office on the top floor have to go there via this dirt and filth.
An interesting contrast that makes one laugh up one’s sleeve – is a note of warning from the market committee against spitting in the building vis-à-vis a heap of trash stained with betel nut-laden spittle below the warning note in a corner the near the steps leading to the ground floor in the rear side. If this is not mockery of warning, what else is? If the GMC is not able to keep its market building clean, what more can citizens of the city expect from the civic body? This continues to remain a million dollar question.
