Gender-based violence keeps rising in State

GUWAHATI, Dec 10: Gender-based violence sees no let-up in Assam despite the change of power at Dispur.  

According to reports from the State police force, till September this year the number of rape cases in the State is 1,321. The number of women trafficking cases during the period is 56. There are as many as 119 dowry deaths during the period, 7104 cases of cruelty by husbands, 3825 cases of kidpping of women/girls and as many as 2431 cases of molestation during the period this year.

The year 2015 was marked by as many as 1,852 rape cases against 2,047 in 2014, 73 trafficking cases against 82 in 2014, 208 dowry death cases against 205 in 2014, 9553 cases of cruelty by husbands against 9405 in 2014, 5068 cases of kidpping of women/girls against 4499 in 2014, and 3362 case of molestation against 3,381 in 2014.

There were 1,937 rape cases in 2013 against 1,716 in 2012, 18 cases of trafficking in 2013 against 30 in 2012, 170 dowry deaths in 2013 against 140 in 2012, 8636 cruelty by husbands in 2013 against 6407 in 2012, 4222 kidpping of women/girl cases in 2013 against 3360 in 2012, 2409 molestation cases in 2013 against 1840 in 2012.

It is seen that in most categories of crimes against women, the trend keeps rising, a development that does not augur well for the State.
