GIS portal to help in disaster magement

GUWAHATI, Sept 6: State Revenue and Disaster Magement Minister Pallav Lochan Das has said that all should know how to confront tural calamities like earthquakes and flash floods.

The minister said this today while taking part in a discussion at NEEDFi House here on his departments’ achievements, especially of Assam State Disaster Magement Authority (ASDMA), in the action plans for the first 100 days of the term.

 “Proper rules should be followed while constructing apartments and buildings so as to ensure safety of others. Availability of open spaces is need of the hour. Such spaces are necessary when there are earthquakes,” he said.

The minister is of the view that people feel safe if they follow procedures and rules during and after any disaster and. “They can also make others aware of such safety norms. No department can work without people’s contribution,” he said.

The ASDMA has come up with mapping of open spaces within Guwahati and two unique web portals to face disaster-related problems. The GIS portal, with the help of which the location of an incident can be pointed out, will help in drawing plans and taking decisions. And the MIS portal shows the availability of different hazard-related equipments with ASDMA.

ASDMA officials viewed that such initiatives would help people in a big way.

ASDMA Additiol Chief Secretary TY Das, Commissioner Secretary Dipak Sharma, Hyderabad Remote Sensing Corporation (HYRC) scientist Srinivasan Rao, officials of ASDMA and volunteers of the Civil Defence Department were also present on the occasion.
