GMC drive to ensure hygienic meat

Guwahati, Oct 22: In a bid to create a healthy surroundings for Guwahtians, Guwahati Municipal Corporation(GMC)  is on a ten-day ‘concentrated drive’ emphasizing health, hygiene and sanitation aspects of the city.

Speaking to this reporter, GMC doctor Anindita Chanda said, “We’re conducting this drive in six zones in the city. Adherence to hygienic and sanitation norms by all roadside food stalls, meat shops (both raw and cooked), restaurants and other eateries are being tested. It has come to our notice that many roadside stalls near Dispur, Beltola, Basistha are selling unhygienic meat which can cause diseases. Our move is against all those unhygienic shops and restaurants. We’ve already completed our drive in some areas like Hatigaon Chari Ali and Six Mile under Dispur zone.”

The authorities said that the drive by the civic body will be completed on 30th of this month. GMC Commissioner Molisa Goswami said, “This mission to put an end to unhygienic eating. We’re also looking after the ways of killing the animals and unscientific mincing of meat. In fact, we’ve called meeting with the butchers’ association to motivate them to maintain hygiene.”

The commissioner further said that necessary action will be taken against traders who are found not fulfilling proper criteria. After receiving all reports, the civic body will decide the pelty to be slapped against those who flout norms.
