GMC market complex: An eyesore in Guwahati

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 7: People, including some VVIPs holding top offices in the State, were seen wielding brooms in their hands during the Swachh Bharat and Swachch Survekshan 2017 drives. However, there are still many important spots in Guwahati that seem to have never had the strokes of any brooms. One such spot is GMC Market Complex at Fancy Bazar in the city.

This market complex is a hellhole awash with stinking wastes of all hues – dregs of vegetable, liquid waste and whatnot. The first floor of the building is used as a market place. Green vegetables and other materials are sold here, leaving bulk of perishable items there, as though to let them get decayed and stink. One with his/her ked eye can say that the floor is hardly swept.

The condition of the second and the third floors of the market complex are even worse. The steps that are used to go upstairs are no different. They are full of filth, including betel nut-laden spittle. These two floors are also used as go-downs by some wholesalers. These two floors seem to have never had the strokes of brooms. They are also awash with a liquid that cannot be identified with ked eyes. The liquid, however, keeps stinking. This apart, wickerwork used as packaging materials while bringing goods to the market complex are also seen discarded there.

This GMC Complex also houses some departments of the civic body as important as Health, Veteriry etc. It is open to question if the health services being rendered from there is hygienic or unhygienic.

The surroundings of the complex look like a dumping pit with heaps of wastes seen here and there, almost everywhere. Be it Swachh Bharat and Swachh Survekshan 2017 drive, GMC is one of the nodal agencies in Guwahati to make the cleanliness drives a success. It seems ‘example is better than precept’ is still to be adopted by the civic body.
