GMC wields brooms when Guwahati sleeps

 BY OUR STFF REPORTER

GUWAHTI, Oct 20: Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has initiated first of its kind post-Diwali mid-night cleanliness drive in the city. The corporation has engaged its workers in cleaning the city from 2 am when there was no Diwali celebration. Speaking to this reporter, GMC Commissioner Molisa Goswami said, “When the city sleeps we sweep the city. This campaign is against the griminess spread by people while celebrating Diwali. Thousands of sticks of sparklers and ashes of crackers fill the city post celebration. It’s good to enjoy Diwali, but we should also be aware keeping the city clean.” “To stay healthy our first concern shall be to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in our surroundings. So, we have started our mission to clean the city at midnight. Thursday morning saw the cleanest post-Diwali Guwahati. This is just the beginning. Since we’ve got good results we’re planning to keep this up, ” Goswami added. Goswami said that as a citizen of this country it is everyone’s duty to keep the city clean. “Passing the buck on the government can’t make us have a clean city,” she said, and added that they were taking some new schemes to make the city cleaner, greener and healthier in the coming days. “However they’ll be successful only with the people’s cooperation,” she said.
