Goalpara firing: Rights panel orders probe

GUWAHATI, July 6: The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has directed the State government to conduct a magisterial inquiry into the firing incident at Golpara on June 30 that led to the death of a youth.

Taking suo moto cognizance (case no-2053/6/17-18) of media reports published in English as well as vercular dailies about the death of the youth—Yakub Ali and injury to another youth—Rejaul Karim in police firing, a single bench of AHRC comprising member ba Kamal Bora, directed the government that notice be issued to the District Magistrate, Goalpara to cause an effective enquiry into the circumstances leading to the death of one protester and causing injury to another one.

The news item reported that Yakub Ali died from injuries received on his head from a stray bullet after police resorted to firing in air to disperse a group of protesters who staged a road blockade on tiol Highway 37 at rarayan Setu point at around 11.30am on June 30, said an AHRC statement. The Commission also received a petition in this regard from Asom Chatra Yuva Sanmilan and intimation from the Superintendent of Police, Goalpara.

The Commission has asked the government to submit the inquiry report within one month.
