GUWAHATI, May 12: Former Congress MP Kirip Chaliha has alleged that the police are reluctant to arrest Congress’ Kamalpur LAC candidate Pranjeet Choudhury under pressure Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
Addressing the press today, Chaliha said: “The Chief Minister doesn’t dare to arrest the party candidate following pressure from higher ups in the party. The candidate has been absconding even after the Gauhati High Court rejecting his bail plea twice. The Chief Minister’s track record on his measures against crimes against is not sound. How come a Chief Minister holding the portfolio of the Home Department can say, when crimes against women are reported, that the people of the State will do justice. Gogoi said this while reacting to Alaka Pandey who had alleged that she had an affair with him. As the Home Minister of the State, law and order is his responsibility, and as such he can’t shrug off his responsibility in ensuring justice to women by making such light comments.”
Chaliha said: “In 2007 when Alaka Pandey backtracked and said that she had brought the allegation against Gogoi as she was instigated by Rani rah, myself and businessman Bhagya Kalita. The Congress then took discipliry action against me. The Women Commission too filed a suo motu case against me. However, where is the Women Commission now? Why don’t they take any such step against Pranjeet Choudhury?”
Chaliha said that a defamation suit filed by him against Alaka Pandey in a Patiala House is yet to be disposed off. “What’s surprising is that as to why the Chief Minister has not dragged Pandey to the court if the charges levelled against him by the woman are baseless,” he added.
