Gorkha bodies demand indigenous status

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 10: The Gorkha tiol Convention that was held in the city today amidst the presence of representatives from as many as eleven Gorkha organizations has taken a slew of decisions, including putting pressure on the government for inclusion of Gorkhas of Assam as an indigenous community on the State. This is already in the charter of demands of the Gorkha Autonomous Council Demand Committee (GACDC).

The meeting decided to extend all support to the democratic and peaceful agitation being carried out in the State by the GACDC. They said that they are ready for a fast-unto-death agitation if their demand is not met. They demanded of the government to make it clear in a white paper if the Gorkhas of the State would be treated as an indigenous ethnic group of Assam or not, during the ongoing budget session. They also requested Dispur to hold the bilateral talks with them before February 20, as their fast-unto-death agitation is slated from February 21.
