GUWAHATI, Oct 11: Assam Assembly Speaker Hitendra th Goswami has done Assam proud. He has been selected as the executive committee member of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India region and a member of the 31-member CPA Intertiol. He is the lone member from India in the intertiol parliamentary body.

The decision was taken at a recent meeting at the Lok Sabha Secretariat in the presence of Lok Sabha Speaker  Sumitra Mahajan and Speakers of other State assemblies of the country.

Addressing the media in Guwahati on Wednesday, Goswami said: “My three-year tenure in CPA Intertiol will be at a meeting slated to be held in Dhaka from November 5-7, 2017. We’ll then have a study tour under CPA Intertiol to Australia and New Zealand. The studies will be mainly on parliamentary and democratic systems.”

Goswami said: “The Lok Sabha Secretariat has come up with the Speakers’ Research Initiative. The Lok Sabha has decided to set up its north-eastern regiol centre at Guwahati. In principle, the Lok Sabha has agreed to bear 50 per cent cost of the venture and the remaining 50 per cent cost is to be borne by the States of the Northeast. We’re going to convene a meeting towards that end in Guwahati on October 27, 2017. We’re contemplating on setting up the research centre at the North East Regiol Institute of Parliamentary Studies and Research campus at Khapara in Guwahati. The Centre will have provisions for internship for degree and postgraduate students.”
