Governor opens NE Vedic astrological meet

 GUWAHATI, Aug 26: Assam Governor Banwarilal Purohit iugurated the North East Vedic Astrological Conference, 2017 which was co-organized by the Vedic Astrological Research Society, Guwahati and Indian Institute of Oriental Heritage, Assam Branch on Saturday at District Library, Guwahati.

Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said that Guwahati which is playing host to the North East Vedic Astrological Conference, can claim to be the hub of the science of Astrology, as Pragjyotishpur has the distinct recognition of being the land where Brahma started the study of astrology on the Karchal Hill. Even bagraha Temple on the Karchal Hill bears the distinction of being an epicentre on astrology, the Governor professed. 
The Governor also said that Shaktipeeth Kamakhya, situated atop the Nilachal Hill, which is considered to be the only Tantra-peeth where millions of devotees converged during the annual Ambubachi mela, also bears the testimony of being the hotbed of Vedic practices. 
Referring to Markandeya Pura, Purohit said Markanda Muni set up an ashram in Kamrup district known as Dirgheswari Ashram. Even it is said that Markanda Muni wrote his great Pura med Markandeya Pura staying in this ashram. He also mentioned that in Treta Yuga, Basistha Muni came and set up his Ashram on Sandhachal Hill, which nowadays known as Basistha Ashram also situated in Guwahati.  
The Governor said that taking into cognizance  the presence of the prolific Vedic footprints in Assam, the state can take the lead in propagating Vedic and astrological knowledge throughout the country and outside also. 
The Governor also added that Astrology falls more in the category of metaphysics. It is similar to other fields that are found on ancient theories of energy patterns, like feng shui, acupuncture and yoga. He also hoped that the deliberations taken place in the Vedic conference must enrich the already fertile soil of Assam with the essence Vedic knowledge. 
Synchronizing with the event, certificates of honour were also handed over by the Governor to some of the members for carrying out research and development activities in Astrology for propagating and popularizing Vedic Jyotisha. A souvenir was also released on the occasion. 
Vice Chancellor of Indian Institute of Oriental Heritage, Kolkata Dr. Ram Krish Sastri, President of North East Vedic Astrological Conference Committee Dr. Kumud Sarma Sastri, Secretary of Indian Institute of Oriental Heritage, Kolkata DR. Amal Krish Sastri, President of Indian Institute of Oriental Heritage, Guwahati, Assam Branch, Sarbeswar Sarma,  Bhrigugiri Maharaj from Panchkanya Dham, Basistha,  former principal of Kamrup Academy Guwahati Rama Goswami, former principal of Kamrup Academy Guwahati Tilak Chandra Sarma  and a host of other dignitaries were present at the function.
