Guwahati, July 6: Gauhati University’s decision to conduct an entrance examition to select students for admission into various postgraduate disciplines has evoked sharp reactions with the All Assam Students’ Union threatens an agitation if the varsity does not withdraw its move.

The Assam College Teachers’ Association and Assam College Principal Council have also vehemently opposed the GU’s decision saying that such move will go against interest of the State’s students. Both the organizations have demanded that the premier university must retain its earlier system of admitting students into postgraduate courses on the basis of marks they score in undergraduate courses.

AASU president Dipanka Kumar th told The Sentinel that GU’s sudden decision to conduct entrance test for PG admission has put fates of several meritorious students hanging in balance and might jeoparadise their academic career. He said the decision is not only unfortute but also self contradictory.

“How could GU hold entrance test for students who came out flying colors (securing above 80 per cent of marks) in the undergraduate exams conducted by the same varsity ? Is GU doubting merits of its own students? Such decision will not be accepted under any circumstance. In case GU does not withdraw its decision the AASU will be forced to launch an agitation on the issue,” th said.

th said if the GU goes ahead its decision the varsity will have to give top priority to the students interest by reserving 80% of total PG seats for them.

Parents have also raised serious concern over the development saying that most of the universities outside Assam are on the verge completing the admission process into PG courses. Under such circumstances many students might lose an academic year in case they fail to clear the proposed entrance test by GU.
