GUWAHATI, April 20: The Axom Xatra Mahaxabha (AXM) has got a supporter in Guwahati MP Bijaya Chakraborty on the debated issue of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

Addressing the media at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in the city on Friday, the BJP MP said: "What the AXM leaders have said during the hearing on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 before the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) is just. Theirs statement on the issue is a well thought-out one."

The Guwahati MP has also disclosed that she herself is an AXM member. "There're is nothing unusual in a BJP member becoming a member of the AXM. The same logic applies to the AXM as well. There's nothing unusual for the AXM liking the BJP."

Coming straight to the moot point of according Indian citizenship to Bangladeshi Hindus, Chak-raborty said: "According Indian citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshis is not going to affect Assam. How many Hindu Bangladeshis have entered Assam after 1971? They can't be more than 10,000. During the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, over 10 lakh East Pakistanis entered Assam. They didn't go back to Bangladesh after the war, nor did the government here take any measure to send them back to their country. Muslim Bangladeshis have changed the demography in Assam. They're pushing the State towards the doomsday." The senior BJP leader further said: "The 1950 Nehru-Liaquet agreement allows Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains to come to India from Pakistan. India's door for Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains from the neighbouring countries has always been open. There's nothing new in the Bill."
