Handloom and tourism are biggest revenue earners: Gogoi

GUWAHATI, March 23: Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said handloom and textiles together with tourism can be the biggest revenue earners and great source of generating employment opportunities.

The Chief Minister said that handloom and textiles has ensured women empowerment without which no state or society can make progress.

Gogoi said Assam is known for its tural beauty, cultural richness and diversity.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the two-day carnival ‘Celebrating Assam’ at a hotel  in Guwahati late evening yesterday, Chief Minister Gogoi said Assam is blessed with tural beauty, cultural richness and diversity.

The Chief Minister said that the colourful cultural mosaic of different ethnic tribes each representing a distinct culture gives the State a uniqueness of its own. Gogoi said the weavers of the State have carved out a special niche for themselves and the exquisite handloom and textiles products have been the cynosure of all eyes. “Our weavers are artistic, talented and creative. What they require is proper exposure and institutes like North East Institute of Fashion Technology with its new and fresh ideas can be of great help,” he added.

The Chief Minister expressed his hope that in the following years the event would be staged on a larger canvas projecting the uniqueness of the State both within and outside the region.

The event was attended also by Minister for Cultural Affairs, Bismita Gogoi and Press Adviser to Chief Minister, Bharat Chandra rah.

Chief Secretary Jitesh Khosla spoke on the occasion.
