Head Injury Day observed

GUWAHATI, March 20: GNRC, the first superspeciality hospital in Northeast India, observed World Head Injury Awareness Day on Tuesday to raise awareness about head injuries and educate the public on how head injuries can be prevented. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. vanil Barua, Director, Department of Neurosurgery, GNRC Hospitals, said: “Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are the most common cause of morbidity, mortality, disability and socioeconomic losses in India. Road traffic crashes are the leading cause of head injuries, mainly in young adult males. It is estimated that over 1·6 million people across the country seek hospital care for TBI every year. Of them, 2,00,000 deaths are recorded and over 1 million survivors require rehabilitation. The problem is placing growing strain on the country’s health-care system (Link). Hence, the need to create awareness about the harmful impact of brain injuries is very high in the country.”
