GUWAHATI, April 6: For the first time since its inception, the Assam Assembly has witnessed the incident of the Speaker barring an MLA from taking part in a debate for not adhering to the dress code befitting the august House. The MLA has, however, been allowed to take part in the debate after he got his dress changed in sync with the sort of decency the august Assembly demands.

In the first half of the days’ proceedings of the Assembly on Friday, Speaker Hitendra th Goswami did give a brief talk on the dress code in the House without ming anyone. He made a fervent appeal to all members of the House to meet the dress code befitting the Assembly, at least maintaining the minimum decency. Citing his personnel experience as the Speaker of the House, Goswami reminded of the members of the House that he had to get his dress changed when a few members of the House raised the issue last year.

In the second half of the session when an important discussion was going on Education, Congress MLA Kamalakshya Purkayastha wanted to raise a question on the issue being talked about. The Speaker, however, barred Purkayastha from taking part in the debate since he was clad in a colourful T-shirt. The MLA was, however, properly shod. Taken aback, the MLA had to leave the House for a few minutes. He, however, came back to the House properly dressed. He took part in rest of the debate.
