Indefinite strike by GMC workers

By our Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, August 17: The Guwahati Municipal Karmi Sangha (GMKS) will resort to an indefinite strike from August 20 in support of their demand for the implementation of pension scheme. Addressing the press today, GMKS convener Chandan Sharma said: “We have been fighting for the implementation of the pension scheme for many years. The Third Assam State Fince Commission also recommended it in 2009. However, due to failure of the government to place it before the cabinet, its implantation is not done as yet. There are 2,000 permanent and 1,000 temporary workers in the GMC. We raised the issue before MGKV Bhanu last year, but to little avail. We, with our four unions -- Guwahati Municipal Karmi Sangha, Sodou Asom Harijon Majdur Union, Harijon Majdur Union and Water Supply Karmi Sangha -- demand the implementation of the scheme before August 20, failing which, we will resort to an indefinite strike from August 20.”
