Institute chairs for Banikanta Kakati: Sanmilan tells GU, DU

GUWAHATI, Nov 15: The Kalita Jagosthiya Sanmilan (KJS) remembered Banikanta Kakati at Bishnu-Nirmala Trust auditorium in the city today on his 122nd birth anniversary.

Former Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX) secretary general Jagadish Patgiri gave a detailed account on the literary works of Late Kakati.

Speaking on the occasion, ULFA general secretary Anup Chetia said: “Assam should be declared an ST state after according ST status to the Kalitas and other ethnic tribes of the State.”

Sanmilan’s president Phaneswar Kalita, who presided over the function, said: “Gauhati University and Dibrugarh University should instituted chairs in the me of Banikanta Kakati. This apart, along with the six ethnic groups of the State, the Kalitas should also be accorded ST status.” A book – Kalita Jagosthir Itihasor Ruprekha – was released on the occasion by Ramanikanta Saharia. Others present at the function were Dr. Vishal Kalita, Suren Deka and Dipankar Kalita.
