Intertiol Day of Older Persons observed

GUWAHATI, Oct 1: With rest of the world, the Intertiol Day of Older Persons was also observed in Guwahati with a daylong programme on Sunday.

The programme was jointly organized by the Social Welfare Department and the Senior Citizen Welfare Council of the State at the convention centre of the PWD Department, Dispur.

Speaking on the occasion, Assam Minister of State  (Independent) for Social Welfare ba Kumar Doley highlighted the contributions of older persons towards a enlightened society and reiterated the governments vision to give recognition to the elder persons as well as the measures taken for the welfare of the elder  section of the society. In his speech, the minister elaborately highlighted various aspects of the ‘Assam Employees Pram Bill’ and said for proper implementation of the programme the Government has already initiated required steps so the elderly persons should get the benefit out of the same. The minister further said that Old-Age Homes will be established in all the district headquarters in a phased manner.

Speaking on the occasion, Social Welfare Department Secretary Alok Saharia said the Government is determined to provide all facilities to the senior citizens in respects of social, fincial and health etc.

Chairperson of the Senior Citizen Welfare Council of Assam Harekrish Bharali stressed providing identity cards to all the senior citizens of the state so that they are able to get benefits of the government.

Earlier, vice chairman of the Senior Citizen Welfare Council of Assam Gauranga Prasad Das highlighted various provisions of the Government for the welfare of the senior citizens in the state. In this connection a technical session was also held wherein Dr. Swarup Kumar Baruah, Dr. Jayanta Das and Habibul Haque elaborately discussed various issues on health and legal aspects related to the elderly sections of society.
