GUWAHATI, Oct 1: Police-public relationship came up for briefing at the Assam Police Day that was centrally observed at Fourth APBn at Kahilipara in Guwahati on Sunday.

Speaking as the chief guest on the occasion, Assam Assembly Speaker Hitendra th Goswami said: “Friendly and intimate police-public relationship favours a peaceful and disciplined society and helps social progress. The police need to perform their duty by taking the trust bestowed on them by the public as their asset. The police have been struggling relentlessly in order to make an atmosphere of peace and order in society. Many of them sacrificed their lives, and many have been living with injuries. At present many steps have been taken up to make the police force more active and powerful. With a view to making police modernization a reality, a scheme – Moitri – has been implemented in the State. I’m pleased at the move to set up a state-level emergency response centre as is the case at the tiol level.”

On corruption, Goswami said: “The present government at Dispur has adopted zero tolerance to corruption and the police have kept their activities going on. It’s pleasing that the rate of corruption has been on the fall in the State now. I appeal to the police personnel to take a pledge to be more efficient, active, tolerant and sensitive.” State DGP Mukesh Sahay greeted the officers, jawans and family members of police officials. He also paid tribute to the police martyrs. “With our eyes set on a stable police-public relationship, we’ve formed a citizens’ committee at each police station and laid stress on making VDPs more powerful. The Union Home Ministry is going to float a ‘Shiksharthi Arokshi Bahini’. Such a force has already been formed by the Assam Police,” Sahay said.

In-charge Chief Secretary VB Pyarelal, Additiol Chief Secretary of the Department of Home Alok Kumar, Principal Secretary of Home LS Sangsong and other top police officers were present at the function.

As many as 29 sportspersons of the Assam Police were felicitated at the function for bringing laurels to the State and its police force from various sports events. Woman archer Pallabi Das has been promoted as Havildar as an honour for bringing laurels to the force by clinching gold and silvers from tiol and intertiol events.
