Irrigation potential increases to 7 lakh hectare in State

GUWAHATI, June 30: The area under irrigation potential has increased to 7 lakh hectare in the State. The State Government is laying emphasis on implementation of more schemes in the irrigation sector.  

At present, the works of 10 major and medium projects are going on in the State under the Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme (AIBP) and out of this 6 projects have already been completed. As per announcements made in  the budget of 2015-16, in major and medium irrigation sector, work of ongoing Dhansiri Major Irrigation Project and Borolia Medium Irrigation proposed to be taken up to achieve 30,911 hectare irrigated area.

So far, 778 irrigation schemes have been taken up in minor irrigation sector under AIBP out of which 473 schemes have already been completed. The State Government, in its Budget announcements, proposed to work of 246 minor irrigation work to achieve 1,09,943 hectare irrigation potential under AIBP, SCSP, TSP, BARD, CM's Special Package for Dhemaji district, NLCPR and NEC's assistance.

With a view to covering 19,335 hectare of command area, Command Area Development and Water Magement Programme of Bordikorai irrigation project, Pahumara Irrigation Project, Dhansiri Irrigation Project, Maloibari LIS (Minor) along with news schemes have been proposed. In order to ensure farmers' participation in the irrigation system, 1095 Water Users' Association have been formed.
