MIRZA, Sept 7: The local people of Palasbari registered their protest for the failure on the part of the police to arrest former minister Jatin Mali in connection with the Bishweswar Baruah suicide case. The local people burnt the effigy of Mali.

Yesterday the Sachetan garik Mancha, Palasbari (SNMP) submitted a memorandum to South Kamrup DC Rajib Prakash Baruah demanding the arrest of Mali within 24 hours. However, 24-hour deadline set by the Mancha expired today but the minister has not been arrested as yet.

With the expiry of the deadline, the Mancha submitted another memorandum before Additiol Deputy Commissioner Gautam Hazarika in Palasbari Revenue Circle and demanded immediate arrest of Mali. Mancha president Kushaljyoti Malakar, secretary Lakshyadhar Talukdar and over 1,000 others burnt the effigy of Mali at Mamoni Raisom Goswami Chowk at Mirza. The protestors had placards and festoons in their hands and shouted slogans like ‘Jatin Mali murdabad, we seek justice to Bishweswar Baruah suicide’ etc. They demanded of the district administration to arrest of Mali immediately for compelling a person to commit suicide. He should be arrested under the anti-corruption law and given exemplary punishment. They demanded of the administration to unearth Mali- Bishweswar connections from their call details.

Meanwhile, the middleman between Jatin Mali and Bishweswar, Hiren Saloi, was arrested today by the police. He had been absconding for the past few days. Saloi was close to Mali. He is the office-bearer of tun Aikya Mancha, Palasbari.

Still now Mali is absconding. The police have been launching operations to b him, but to no avail. The local people demanded of the administration to ensure the arrest of the former minister.
