Kamala Saikia award for excellence in jourlism proposed in Budget

GUWAHATI, March 10: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has proposed to institute an award for excellence in jourlism in the me of Kamala Saikia, a jourlist of Ajir Asom who had been slain by the ULFA in 1991. The Budget has also proposed to formulate rules for contributing to the welfare of the bereaved families of jourlists who died untimely while in service.

It is worth mentioning here that the institution of the Kamala Saikia award had been a long-standing demand of the All Press Correspondents’ Union (APCU), Assam. A delegation of the APCU met the Chief Minister on February 13 this year, and, along with other demands, requested him to institute an award in the me of Jourlist Kamala Saikia. The APCU hailed the proposal to institute an award in the me of the late jourlist. The APCU also requested the Chief Minister to speed up the investigation into the cases relating to the killing as many as 24 jourlists killed in the state since 1991 and pay compensation to next of their kin.
