Kamrup administration to regulate hostels & children homes

GUWAHATI, April 20: Close on the heels of the allegation of severe corporal punishment to a ten-year-old differently- abled child from Aruchal Pradesh in an NGO at Sopur on the city outskirts on Wednesday, Kamrup Metropolitan district administration had decided to regulate private hostels, orphages and child care home and has been taken some initiatives in this regard.

All children homes, hostels, orphages will be allowed to operate only with registration from the district administration, an official statement stated on Thursday.

“There will be district level inspection committee to inspect and submit a report on the existing homes and orphages.

All homes, orphages and hostels in district should admit inmates’ details etc. to the district administration,” a district administration official revealed.

The official further said that district administration will desigte District Social Welfare Officer and District Child Welfare Committee as a competent authority for the registration and grievance redressal.

There will be a capacity building programme on child protection and other welfare measures for the existing homes and orphages, added the officials.

Special care will be given for the orphages, homes and hostels, where women and girls, children were being admitted.

A district level inspection committee comprising a team of officials from administration, police, Social Welfare department, Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) will soon visit the orphages, homes and hostels across the district for ensuring a safe environment to the inmates, particularly women and children and submit its report to the Deputy Commissioner, said the official.  

A team of experts will be formed to take care of various grievances of the inmates. Proper orientation about proper health care and other emergency provisions like fire safety etc. will be factored in toto, he said.
