GUWAHATI, June 8: A high-power inquiry committee formed by the Kamrup (M) Deputy Commissioner on May 17, 2016 to inquire into the allegations of a taxi syndicate doing a roaring business in the Lokapriya Gopith Bordoloi Intertiol Airport (LGBI) in Guwahati had its first meeting today. Kamrup (M) Additiol District Magistrate Muktath Saikia presided over the meeting.

In its report on May 15, 2016, The Sentinel had alleged that an uuthorized taxi organization was running a syndicate in the premises of the airport, resulting in harassment to travelling passengers. As per allegations, the syndicate is being run by Guwahati Airport Taxi Association, which is not an authorised association under the Airport Authority of India (AAI), Borjhar.

Today’s meeting held at the Regiol Training Centre (ATC) at the intertiol airport reviewed the existing taxi stand, parking space available at present, the operation of taxis, etc.

The meeting was attended by representatives from the Airport authority of India (AAI), Guwahati West DCP Jitmol Doley, the Kamrup (M) Assistant Commissioner, representatives from the CISF, three DTOs from Kamrup (M) and Kamrup, representatives from Azara police station and Azara Revenue Circle.

In a statement issued to the press today, Kamrup (M) district administration said that the committee would collect drivers’ licenses, road permits of the taxis, details of agencies operating taxis by June 13 and meet again on June 15.

As per allegations, the syndicate issues parking spots to commercial vehicles coming from Tezpur, Jorhat, Shillong and other places, which has been causing immense difficulties to the authorised taxi associations and also for the smooth running of the airport. Agents of the Guwahati Airport Taxi Association also woo unsuspecting travellers as soon as they come out of the arrival lounge to these uuthorised taxis in lieu for commission.
