Kite and river festival begins

GUWAHATI, Jan 1: Celebrating the Brahmaputra with a week-long celebration including the holding of 5th Jeevan Kite & River Festival!

Volunteers’ association Jeevan Initiative is putting together its Brahmaputra campaign and the lead event – 5th Jeevan Kite & River Festival – that was iugurated at Rajaduwar Ghat in Panbazar today.  Kites from Korea and Chi and from other States of India will be flown on the riverbank sky. Kite has been a metaphor for denoting the flight and freedom of mind. This year, in technical association with Manipur Mountaineering and Trekking Association and Global Adventure Association, various adventure activities, including parasailing, ATB bike, and many other acts have been added into the festival menu. A choreography contest based on the songs on river Brahmaputra and its tributaries is being organized. Already in association with Cotton College Union Society, the first-ever quiz on Brahmaputra was held. An exhibition of photographs and artwork based on the river have been installed at the site.  Everyday there will be cultural shows, sky watch, aeromodelling, robotics, river cruise etc. The evenings will witness lighting up of the riverbank with thousands of earthen lamps. The Brahmaputra Campaign has included various other activities, including a helping hand initiative with water purifiers, lamps, kitchen utensils for the villagers affected by devastating floods. Jeevan has also adopted a village on the bank of Jiri river. Assam lemon saplings have been planted in unutilized land of most of the villagers. The village was reduced to ashes during Garo-Rabha clashes. The festival will conclude of January 7.
