KKHSOU convocation: Two jail inmates get degrees

GUWAHATI, Feb 5: Chandra Chutia and Buddha Bania, inmates of Jorhat Central Jail, are among the thousand others to receive degrees on the second convocation of Krish Kanta Handique State Open University (KKHSOU) today in the city.

Chutia and Bania completed Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 2015 and are now pursuing masters from KKHSOU. KKHSOU has study centers in 13 jails across the state. Chutia and Bania were convicted of murder.

Today, during the convocation the University conferred various degrees on 34,928 students. Of them 32,236 were given Bachelor's degree, 2678 Masters Degree and nine PhD.

"We are planning on making a long-term vision plan for 2030. Our aim is to provide higher education to each and every family in Northeast. The plan is to generate revenue as mu as possible from the admission fees of the courses, and to reach out to as much families possible in the process. We are also chalking out methods of streamlining the money from fees collected through a more transparent and organised manner to check misuse of funds," KKHSOU dean Arupjyoti Choudhury said.

KKHSOU currently has 53 academic programmes and 351 study centres including 13 jail study centres in the state enrolling over 1.5 lakh students.
