Kolkata recalls bridge builder

GUWAHATI, Sept 8: The Bhupan Hazarika Cultural Trust (BHCT), along with Assamese Cultural Association, celebrated the birthday of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika with a three-day-long function at Assam Bhawan, Madushudhan Bhawan and the GS Exhibition Centre in Kolkata on Friday.

The programme was iugurated by writer Phanindra Dev Choudhury this morning amid a chorus by Hazarika’s scion Mayuk Hazarika and party. Those present at the function were caught by nostalgia remembering their days with the balladeer. A souvenir edited by Manjula Hazarika and Pradip Pujari was released by writer Anuradha Sarma Pujari and Mangal Singh Hajuwary at the function.

Dr. Hazarika had gone to Kolkata in 1950s and started his career there where he had his troupe, including accompaniment. A number of artistes who had accompanied Dr. Hazarika with instruments were felicitated on the occasion on Friday. A number of artistes were also felicitated at the function.

In the evening a cultural nite was organized after lighting as many as 91 flames in memory of the singer, better known as ‘bridge builder’ for building bridges among communities, states and tions.
