'Land revenue office has turned into land mafia office'

GUWAHATI, February 25: Members of the Bhumi Adhikar Sangram Samity (BASS) today gheraoed the Dispur Revenue Circle office in protest against corruption in the department in the me of giving land pattas, mutation etc.
The Samity alleged that the land Revenue Circle Office has turned into a ‘land mafia office’ since for mere mutation of land one has to spend not less than Rs 50,000 as bribes. “Land brokers have been minting money. Without paying huge amounts to the brokers, not work can be done in the office,” the agitating members of the Samity said, and added: “Even a landless poor has to spend around Rs 40,000 to get a landless certificate issued to him.” The agitators demanded of the office to inspect lands on the spot and conduct their survey. They also threatened that they might go to the extreme step of locking the office if it continued corrupt practices.
