Land to landless with a rider

GUWAHATI, February 17: The Assam Government will give lands to landless people in Guwahati but such people will not be allowed to sell their land ever. Such lands will, however, be mutated to the progenies of the recipients as usual. The Assam Cabinet took the decision to provide land measuring 1.5 katha to each landless family in Guwahati on humanitarian ground. However, this rider has to be added that some people who claim themselves as landless in Guwahati actually possess land at places where they come from. The Gauhati High Court also sought a clarification from Dispur as people claiming themselves as landless may possess lands at places where they come from. According to Revenue Department sources, if the High Court agrees to, lands will be given to landless people in Guwahati in the middle of this year.
